ABOUT

A Lifetime at the Drawing Board

At a very early age I always knew I was going to be an artist, earning a living from it all these years was something I never, at that age, considered but Art and Design has been a kind and benevolent friend to me all my working life and has enabled me to travel the world, work with incredible artists and photographers, see my work in magazines, exhibitions, galleries, adverts, packaging and toys and latterly, the joy of seeing people wearing my art.

Since leaving Art college in the late 60’s, my first job was at an avant garde, forward thinking studio called Scan Design based in London, where I was lucky enough to work on a revolutionary form of book publishing, including million sellers, “Touchdown on the moon” and “The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes”

Circumstances took me to Munich, Germany where, for almost a decade, I worked for the legendary advertising agency, ‘Sportive’ and was awarded the senior role of art director in 1973, being responsible for BMW Motorsport, Helicopter Graphics, Head ski-wear, Uvex ski goggles, sunglasses and numerous prestigious accounts.

Serendipity brought me back to England at the beginning of the 80’s when I started my own freelance design studio called ‘Trevor Richardson, designer of the extraordinary’.

The design and publishing world was moving forward at a gallop, computers were beginning to be seen replacing the drawing board and the traditional studio setup.

It was at this time I began to experiment with three dimensional models for advertising purposes. So over a period of about six months I designed and created a product called ‘Slitakit’, which was a system of cardboard engineering, which required no scissors, no glue, no painting. It was an immediate success, selling over a hundred thousand units! This led to orders from British Airways, Sealink, Express Dairy and many other UK clients.

Concurrently, I was still being asked to do brochure work for Concorde, Thorn EMI and Philips and even the first brochure launch for Jack Nicklaus’s St Mellion golf course!

Although the world was changing, I still preferred to work in pencil, pen and ink, on a drawing board. So, throughout the 90’s and into the new millennium, I have been content to still be working in my own individual way, and continue to hold onto the thrill of creating a new image from a blank sheet of paper. It never ceases to excites me as much as it did all those years ago!

It has been a continuing and unexpected joy that, throughout my career, I have won many awards.

In Europe for packaging and advertising, in England for exhibition design and logos but I am still, to this day, proud of the honour of having my work selected and promoted by the Design Centre London.

So,  just to bring you up to date, I’m writing this short bio on my drawing board, cup of tea and a biscuit to the right, angle-poise is above me and I am about to start a new design… Bob Dylan is on the turntable and the world is perfect!

Please enjoy my designs as they were designed for you, with you in mind! Happy viewing…
